Pondering no longer . . .

. . . I've come to a conclusion regarding one of my ponderings from a previous post (here).

I've decided that I'm going to keep on pinning on Pinterest.
And I'm not going to feel like a criminal doing it!

For some reason, the discussions floating around concerning the controversial subject of people stealing (well, maybe not stealing but borrowing heavily) other's ideas by first - not getting permission to pin a photo and second - having the nerve to announce that they are going to make one of whatever it is too, has really sucked me in.  I've read it all.  I've thought long and hard about it.  Frankly, I've come to the conclusion that the issue is a bunch of hooey and I'm done, done, done.

My thoughts (and I know they are usually somewhat skewed in favor of me) are if it is on the web, it is public domain.  Therefore, free to look at and get inspired by and pin for later drooling over if I darn well please.

You put the photo of whatever there on your blog yourself for all to see.  Forgive me for being blunt, but 'get over it'.

Judging by the responses I received previously, most of you feel the same way.  If you have a different opinion please explain.  My mind can very easily be changed.

Just ask my family.  They know I can change my mind in a nanosecond.  And then change it back faster than a nanosecond.

I really think the so-called problem stems from the 'repinning' of things.  If a photo is 'repinned', does it not refer you back to the original post, the original owner or the original etsy/shop/website?  I'm not sure because I very seldom repin.  If I see something I like from someone else's boards, I go to the original location and pin from there.  Giving credit where credit is due.  And I don't just pin willy-nilly.  I'm choosy.  So if something of yours is pinned by me, you have offered something that I find simply adorable in some way or another.  Thank you.

I've found many new-to-me wonderful blogs through Pinterest.  I figure we both win.  They get a new follower and I maybe find a new like-minded blog friend.  I'm discovering new, fresh perspectives on decorating, photography, crafting, sewing, cooking or whatever strikes my fancy on any given day.

I've found a couple of my photos that someone has pinned and it is thrilling to know that whatever it was, someone else thought it was 'pin worthy'.  I consider it very flattering.

I foresee bad karma for Pinterest in the future.  Someone will sue.  Someone always does and ruins it for the rest of us.

To summarize, I'm a Pinterest pinner and I'm not ashamed to say it.

I realize my addiction but I'm not ready for Pinterest rehab quite yet.  I'll just bide my time until it goes the way of Picnik, MySpace and the old Google follower links.  Something bigger and better always comes along.  And brings it's own controversy with it.

Pinteret is way easier than bookmarking every. single. thing.

So pin away my friends.  Come visit my boards.  Pin something that makes you happy.  Or don't.

It is A-OK with me.

I agree, I don't consider myself the internet police. If you enjoy it, do so while you can because you're right...something else will come along soon! My dh is an attorney and he made the same comment as you.
Once you put your image on the internet it's out there for everyone to see.
I didn't read all the legal small print (there's too much of it and I got a headache), but it will be interesting to see what happens with pinterest, if anything.

Love it, Connie...I'm with you! And if someone is worried about protecting their art...the internet isn't the place to be putting it!

I'm not going to let it deter me either. And if someone pins something of mine...I just view it as a compliment.

I have to say that I totally agree with you! I myself am flattered when I see something I created repinned. And if I repin something with intentions to recreate it, it will be for me only-I won't sell it or claim it as my own. Good for you for saying how it is lady!

Connie, I agree with you. From one point of view: by putting your work out there on the web, be it a selling site, photo-hosting site, or a blog...you are opening yourself up to unscrupulous copying. You have to be naive to not think that someone is going to duplicate your work. From the other (weaker) point of view...you can have only so much control over this. Stating that your work is protected by copyright protects it. It protects calling their work yours or reselling as yours--item or original instructions. Perhaps that is where people object.

Every website is fighting for attention, FB, selling sites, and the newest Pinterest. The longer you are one their site...the better for them. I suspect the appeal will die down when the next one comes along.

My 3 cents which you don't have to publish, lol. Just a lot easier to answer here than email.

Good For you and as you already know, I am in agreement with you! It is public domain and as long as you don't claim it as your own, then...? I always put the original source if I can trace it back. There are graphic sites you can't seem to find the source so I site them. I thought all this blogging was for sharing? Am I wrong? Have a good one.

I love it too Connie!!!! I feel the same way..I've been being a little more careful to make sure my pin comes from a true source, not Tumblr or something. And you are so right too, if your stuff is on the internet, get ready, someone, somewhere is gonna SEE it! I love Pinterest too because it has brought so many new friends to my blog and my Etsy shop ~ it's free advertising! Pin away sweet friend and smile while you're doing it ~ hugs and love, Dawn

Connie, I'm a newbie at pinning. Like what you have to say here. I do think credit should be given to the original source, but can an idea really be exclusive. Who's to say others can't come up with the same idea?
I'm off to see your boards.......Sarah

I agree with you on this! I've had one friend who has chastised me about awful Pinterest is for copyright violations, blah, blah, blah. Sorry to her, but I just don't see it. You put it out there on the web, so put on your big girl panties and deal with it, I say!

I don't know a single professional photographer that doesn't have some web presence. I put my photos out there, copyrighted of course in the file date and with my stamp on the image, and I am flattered when they are pinned. I hope that I will get more blog traffic and find more friends! I sold the license to an image recently just because my image came up in a Google search. There may be some who "steal" my images, but they are not posted at high, print quality.

I do have a problem with how some people pin. The majority don't seem to even link up! I click through and make sure that they do before I repin. Also, the way folks name their pins are messing up the search engine. Type "cute" into search and see what a hodgepodge of things you get! It is best to type in a good description. If you don't, nobody will ever find it in a search unless they want to manually scan through 1 million images labeled "cute"!
